Welcome To Golden Stars Football Club

About Us

Golden Stars Football Club was formed in 1995 under the auspices of the Ghana Association of New South Wales Inc. The club was created to promote and foster unity among the youth of the Ghanaian Community in Sydney. With football/soccer being the number one sport in Ghana, it was an ideal mechanism to bring the youth together and to keep them off the streets, as they sought to settle into the mainstream society.

The founding members of the club included Mrs Margaret Lee, Mr Braimah Abubakar Mahama, Yaw Acheampong, Emmanuel Poku Acheampong and Frank Doffour.

From its humble beginnings on numerous suburban parks around Western Sydney, the club has gone on to play in many amateur soccer competitions around Sydney; and has been affiliated with many clubs in the process.

Previously known as Golden Dwarfs FC and Sydney Dwarfs FC, the club settled on the name Golden Stars Football Club in 2007, and has plans to formalise the incorporation of the club in the near future.

Whilst the majority of our players are of Ghanaian descent, the club has seen a rapid expansion and diversity of members over the years. Our playing roster in 2007 for instance consisted of players from Fiji, Columbia, Uganda and Sierra Leone. The club welcomes players of all nationalities.

Golden Stars Football Club has been affiliated with the Sydney Amateur Football League Inc since 2007 and currently plays in the winter soccer competition across Sydney.

In August 2007 Mr Les Murray of the World Game Program on SBS Television produced a segment on the team to showcase our impact within the local community; and to encourage Australian football clubs to consider recruiting players from the African contingent in view of their natural skills and technical ability. (A copy of the segment will be available on the site in due course).

Since 2000 the club has also represented Ghana in the annual African-Australian Youth Soccer Championships (“The African Cup”), which is sponsored by the NSW Department of Health to promote the awareness and prevention of HIV/AIDS within the African community in Sydney.

Ghana are 5-time winners of the African Cup, achieving top honours in 2000, 2004, 2007, 2008 and 2010.

The club is also proud to have served as the stepping stone for some of our members that are now plying their trade in the professional football leagues across Australia and abroad; as well as having a former player of the Junior National team (The Black Starlets of Ghana) don our jersey.

Golden Stars Football Club has no major sponsors and throws an invitation to all businesses to come on board and to share in our success as a club both on and off the park. Please contact Yaw Acheampong on 0407 297 486 for any further information.

We trust that you will enjoy our website.
